Kunj Journeys · Travel guide
Two Jyotirlingas. Four Destinations. One Comfortable Base in Indore.
Planning a trip to Mahakaleshwar, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar and Indore sounds simple until you start arranging hotels, taxis, temple visits, sightseeing stops and transportation for everyone travelling with you.
It becomes even more complicated when you are travelling with parents, children or a larger family group.
That is exactly why we created the Kunj 3-Day Jyotirlinga & Indore Experience.
Stay at Kunj Resort in Indore, keep one comfortable accommodation base throughout your journey, and explore Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar and Indore through a customised travel plan.
The experience can be arranged for 2 to 38 guests, with transportation selected according to your group size. Options can include vehicles such as Swift Dzire, Toyota Innova, Innova Crysta and suitable combinations of vehicles for larger groups.
Your journey can begin right from Indore Airport or Indore Railway Station.
Quick answer
A practical three-day itinerary from Indore is:
Day 1 — Ujjain: Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, Shri Mahakal Lok, Harsiddhi Temple, Kal Bhairav and selected additional Ujjain attractions.
Day 2 — Omkareshwar + Maheshwar: Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga followed by Maheshwar’s fort area, temples, Narmada ghats and heritage.
Day 3 — Indore: Rajwada Palace, Lal Bagh Palace, Bada Ganpati, Bijasan Temple, Pitra Parvat, Chappan Dukan and Sarafa when your departure schedule permits.
Guests return to Kunj Resort after Days 1 and 2, so there is no need to keep changing hotels or moving luggage.
Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain and Omkareshwar are both among India’s twelve Jyotirlingas, making this route particularly attractive for travellers who want to combine pilgrimage with Indore and Maheshwar in one short trip.
Your 3-Day Journey from Kunj Resort
Your trip can begin with pickup from:
Indore Airport
or
Indore Railway Station
From there, your stay and transportation can be coordinated around your arrival time, group size and sightseeing priorities.
The objective isn’t to rush through as many destinations as possible.
It is to make the journey easier.
One resort. One travel plan. One base to return to.
Day 1 — Indore to Ujjain
Begin with Mahakal
The first day is centred around Ujjain, one of India’s most important pilgrimage cities.
Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple is home to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and is the defining spiritual landmark of Ujjain. The Jyotirlinga is distinctive for its south-facing orientation.
Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga
For most travellers, Mahakaleshwar is the primary purpose of the Ujjain journey.
Allow enough flexibility for darshan rather than building the entire day around rigid sightseeing times. Waiting periods can change significantly according to the date, festivals and temple crowds.
Guests particularly interested in Bhasma Aarti should plan for it separately. Official tourism and temple information advise advance booking for participation.
Shri Mahakal Lok
Continue through Shri Mahakal Lok, which extends for more than 900 metres and features pillars, sculptures and murals depicting stories associated with Lord Shiva.
Mahakal Lok adds an architectural and visual experience to the spiritual journey rather than making the visit only about temple darshan.
Harsiddhi Temple
A visit to Harsiddhi Temple fits naturally into the Ujjain circuit.
The temple is one of Ujjain’s important sacred sites and is particularly recognisable for its two traditional lamp pillars.
Kal Bhairav Temple
Continue to Kal Bhairav Temple, one of Ujjain’s prominent Shaivite pilgrimage sites.
The temple is closely associated with the worship of the eight Bhairavas and remains an important part of the city’s spiritual circuit.
What else can you see in Ujjain?
Depending on darshan time, traffic, the age of travellers and your preferred pace, additional stops could include:
Ram Ghat · Mangalnath Temple · Sandipani Ashram · Gopal Mandir · Vedh Shala
These are recognised visitor attractions in Ujjain.
We would deliberately treat these as optional additions, rather than promising every attraction to every group.
A relaxed family journey should not feel like a race against a sightseeing checklist.
End of Day 1
Return to Indore.
Overnight stay at Kunj Resort.
Instead of checking into another hotel after a long pilgrimage day, return to the same familiar resort, unwind and prepare for the next journey.
Day 2 — Indore to Omkareshwar & Maheshwar
Jyotirlinga Darshan Meets Narmada Heritage
Day 2 combines two very different experiences.
The morning belongs to Omkareshwar and pilgrimage.
The later part of the journey belongs to Maheshwar, the Narmada and heritage.
Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga
Travel from Kunj Resort towards Omkareshwar for Jyotirlinga darshan.
Omkareshwar is another of India’s twelve Jyotirlinga destinations, which is why combining Ujjain and Omkareshwar in the same trip is particularly meaningful for many pilgrims.
Depending on your priorities and the available time, the Omkareshwar experience may also include the surrounding riverfront and other nearby sacred sites.
As with Ujjain, temple queues and local conditions should determine the pace of the day.
Omkareshwar to Maheshwar
After Omkareshwar, continue towards Maheshwar.
This is where the character of the journey changes.
From the intensity of temple darshan, you move into riverfront heritage, stone ghats, architecture and a slower experience beside the Narmada.
Explore Maheshwar
Maheshwar is closely associated with the Holkar legacy and is known for its fort area, temples, riverfront ghats and traditional Maheshwari weaving.
A comfortable Maheshwar visit can include:
Maheshwar Fort / Ahilya Fort area
Narmada Ghats
Temples around the historic precinct
Maheshwari handloom and saree shopping
Don’t try to convert this part of the trip into another rushed sightseeing list.
One of Maheshwar’s greatest strengths is simply having time to experience the riverfront.
End of Day 2
Return to Indore.
Overnight stay at Kunj Resort.
By now, the advantage of using one resort as the travel base becomes very clear.
No new hotel.
No repacking.
No moving your luggage every morning.
Just return, rest and continue the journey the next day.
Day 3 — Indore Local Sightseeing
Discover the City Behind Your Journey
The first two days explore destinations outside Indore.
The final day brings the journey back to the city itself.
Indore combines Holkar heritage, temples and one of Madhya Pradesh’s best-known food cultures.
Rajwada Palace
Begin with Rajwada, one of the defining historic landmarks of Indore.
Located in the older part of the city, Rajwada is strongly associated with Indore’s Holkar heritage.
Bada Ganpati
Visit Bada Ganpati, another well-known spiritual landmark in the city.
It adds a natural temple stop to the final day for guests whose journey has primarily been centred around pilgrimage.
Lal Bagh Palace
Continue towards Lal Bagh Palace for another side of Indore’s history.
The palace is associated with the Holkar period and offers a very different experience from the temples of Ujjain and Omkareshwar.
Bijasan Mata Temple
The Indore circuit can also include Bijasan Mata Temple, depending on the group’s interests and departure schedule.
Pitra Parvat / Pitreshwar Hanuman
Continue towards Pitra Parvat, another popular devotional stop in Indore.
For families making the journey primarily for spiritual reasons, it helps Day 3 retain the religious character of the first two days while still allowing time to explore Indore.
And then, experience Indore through its food
You haven’t really completed an Indore trip without leaving some space for food.
Two names naturally belong in the itinerary.
Chappan Dukan — 56 Dukan
Make time for Chappan Dukan, one of Indore’s popular food destinations.
The area makes it easy for families and groups to sample different snacks and local favourites in one place.
Sarafa Bazaar
Then there is Sarafa.
Sarafa is best known for its evening and night-time street-food experience.
That means it needs to be planned around your return train or flight rather than automatically added to every Day 3 schedule.
If your departure is later in the evening or you are staying another night, Sarafa can become a memorable final chapter to the trip.
If your flight or train leaves earlier, we adjust the sightseeing plan instead of forcing everything into the day.
And that flexibility is exactly how this itinerary should work.
Practical plan
1. Tell Kunj how you are travelling
Start with four basic details:
Travel dates
Number of guests
Arrival point — Indore Airport or Railway Station
Return flight/train timing
These four details determine almost everything else.
2. Choose the right pace and vehicle
The itinerary can be customised for groups from 2 to 38 guests.
Depending on your group size and requirements, transportation can be arranged using options such as:
Swift Dzire · Toyota Innova · Innova Crysta · other suitable sedan/SUV/MUV or multiple-vehicle combinations
Families with senior citizens may prefer fewer stops and longer darshan/rest periods.
A younger group may prefer to add more sightseeing, food stops or time in Maheshwar.
There should not be one rigid itinerary for everyone.
3. Let the temple days remain flexible
Avoid building your holiday around exact minute-by-minute schedules.
Temple queues, festivals, darshan procedures, road traffic and weather can all affect your day.
Instead, prioritise:
Day 1: Mahakaleshwar + key Ujjain spiritual sites
Day 2: Omkareshwar + Maheshwar
Day 3: Indore highlights based on your departure
Everything else can be adjusted around those priorities.
Where Kunj fits naturally
Most travel websites can give you a list of places.
What they usually cannot give you is one coordinated base for your stay and the journey around it.
That is where Kunj Resort fits differently.
Stay in one place
The Kunj itinerary is built around returning to Kunj Resort in Indore after your Ujjain and Omkareshwar–Maheshwar journeys.
Kunj offers four Harmony Rooms and four themed cottages, with combined accommodation capacity suitable for groups of up to 38 guests.
That means the same experience can work for:
a couple,
a small family,
several families travelling together,
a group of friends,
or a larger pilgrimage group.
Explore Kunj Resort stays to choose the accommodation that works for your group.
Travel from one central base
Kunj can arrange transportation for local and outstation journeys.
Instead of separately finding:
a hotel,
an airport taxi,
a Ujjain cab,
another Omkareshwar vehicle,
and an Indore sightseeing driver,
the idea is to bring the journey together.
Stay at Kunj. Explore Madhya Pradesh. Leave the logistics to one plan.
Pick-up from Indore
Your experience can begin from:
Indore Airport
or
Indore Railway Station
That makes the itinerary especially useful for families flying or travelling by train into Indore before visiting Mahakal and Omkareshwar.
Indore is a practical arrival point for this pilgrimage circuit; route and journey time depend on your pickup point and traffic.
Optional Bhasma Aarti planning
If attending Mahakaleshwar’s Bhasma Aarti is one of the main reasons for your journey, mention it while planning your trip.
Participation requires advance arrangements through the authorised temple system and should therefore be treated as a special itinerary requirement rather than a guaranteed inclusion.
One journey instead of separate bookings
The experience we want to create is simple:
You arrive in Indore.
We help organise the stay.
We help organise the vehicle.
We help shape the sightseeing plan.
You spend three days exploring.
And between the journeys, you come back to Kunj.
Three days. Two Jyotirlingas. One resort to come home to.
